“Many of the rainforest species whose songs evoke longing begin to call in the late afternoon, as the sun gets lower and the time of its disappearance nears. The approaching sunset itself evokes a sense of impending loss. The solo instruments are played in the late afternoon when the day’s work tapers, while sitting or lying on one’s mat and thinking, perhaps, of a loved one gone away. Playing a flute, bamboo-tube zither, or mouthharp at that hour allows one to cedu henum, ‘to clear the breath of the heart of remembrance’, ‘to free one’s feelings’. The flute, in addition to being an instrument of ‘clearing’ or ‘freeing’ the longings of the late afternoon, is also an instrument os courtship and seduction.”
